New Restrictions and Measures
In this context, Pakistan has decided to reduce fuel for official vehicles, prohibit the purchase of government vehicles, ban foreign travel for officials, and hold official gatherings. These measures have been implemented for the second time this year and also include a ban on purchasing durable goods for the government, except for the procurement of information technology equipment and a shift to holding meetings via video conferencing.
Background of Conservation Measures
Similar measures were implemented in March in Pakistan, which included closing schools for two weeks, reducing fuel consumption in government offices, and encouraging employees to work from home. The aim of these actions is to reduce fuel consumption and lower government expenses in the face of energy crises.
Additionally, Pakistan has launched a new policy starting Wednesday that provides a subsidy of 100 rupees (equivalent to 36 cents) per liter to owners of motorcycles, rickshaws, and small cars, within a limited monthly quota. This initiative is designed to mitigate the impact of rising prices on vulnerable segments of society.
Impact of Regional Tensions on Pakistan's Economy
U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran over the past six months have disrupted oil and gas exports through the Strait of Hormuz. Currently, conflicts between Saudi Arabia and Iran-backed Houthis are also putting trade in the Red Sea at risk. These tensions have particularly affected global fuel prices and posed serious challenges for Pakistan in securing energy.
