The Philippines, as the chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), expressed deep concern over the recent airstrike in Myanmar's Rakhine State. This attack, which resulted in the deaths of 50 people and injuries to several others, has drawn significant attention. Anabel Marie Hernandez, the Undersecretary for ASEAN Affairs of the Philippines, criticized the attack in a statement and emphasized the importance of monitoring developments and assisting the victims.
Philippines' Response and ASEAN's Role
Hernandez stated in this announcement: "The Philippines is closely monitoring developments and expresses concern over attacks that lead to destruction and loss of lives and harm to individuals." Additionally, the Philippines, as the chair of ASEAN, announced that it respects the views of all member countries and will continue to adhere to the consensus-based approach of this regional bloc.

Moreover, the Philippines is seeking to facilitate discussions within ASEAN regarding ways to assist Myanmar. These efforts aim to achieve a solution that is "led by the people of Myanmar and under their leadership." This stance reflects the Philippines' determination to assist its neighbors and improve humanitarian conditions in the region.
Airstrike and Current Situation in Myanmar
The airstrike in the Kyauk Taw area is considered the deadliest attack since the bombing of a hospital last December. Myanmar has been embroiled in a nationwide civil war since the military coup in 2021. Armed groups such as the Arakan Army are fighting against the military in these conflicts. This prolonged war has resulted in nearly 100,000 deaths and displaced over 3.5 million people in this impoverished Southeast Asian country.
The continuation of these conflicts has not only affected the daily lives of the people of Myanmar but has also created a widespread humanitarian crisis. The Philippines, as a neighboring country and an ASEAN member, is striving to play a positive role in alleviating this crisis and believes that regional cooperation can help improve the situation.
