A powerful storm in the United States, particularly in the northeastern regions of the country, occurred on Saturday with heavy rainfall and strong winds. This situation resulted in the cancellation of hundreds of flights and power outages for thousands of people. Cities like New York, Boston, and Philadelphia are recognized as the main areas affected by the 'Nor'easter' storm, which takes its name from the northeastern winds.

Forecasting Tools and Impacts

Nor'easters, known as major storms in the northwestern Atlantic Ocean, typically form along the eastern coast of the United States. These storms can occur throughout the year, but they are more common in the fall and early spring seasons. These storms are almost always accompanied by heavy rainfall or snowfall as well as strong winds.

Local officials have warned about the storm, advising residents in low-lying and coastal areas to be vigilant about the possibility of flooding and road blockages, as the storm coincides with high waves. The National Weather Service has predicted that this storm will cause serious flooding along the mid-Atlantic coast during several tidal cycles over the weekend.

Dangerous Conditions and Safety Measures

According to reports, approximately 95,000 people in the states of New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Pennsylvania experienced power outages at 3 PM on Saturday (1900 GMT). Kathy Hochul, the Governor of New York, stated that the storm has particularly affected the coastal areas of New York City and Long Island. She described the conditions as very dangerous and advised residents to avoid approaching the water.

In the wake of this storm, hundreds of flights were canceled, with 253 flights canceled at Logan Airport in Boston. Airlines such as JetBlue, United, and American issued travel warnings and allowed passengers to change their flights without incurring fees.

At 6:13 PM local time (2213 GMT), reports indicated that 439 flights had been canceled at U.S. airports and 2,459 flights were delayed. Additionally, major cultural events have also been canceled due to adverse conditions, including the Global Citizen Festival and the All Things Go Festival in New York and Oceans Calling in Maryland.

The organizers of the Global Citizen Festival in Central Park, which was set to feature artists like Lenny Kravitz and Alicia Keys, announced that this is the first time in 14 years they have been forced to cancel the event. Ed Sheeran's concerts were also canceled due to the storm near Boston.

Forecasts indicate that in some areas of Massachusetts, including Boston, about five inches (13 centimeters) of rain will fall. This amount is equivalent to more than a month's worth of rainfall.
