Qatar, as one of the largest producers of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in the world, has recently decided to extend the force majeure related to the transportation of LNG to Europe and Asia for another month. This decision follows ongoing disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz and the impacts of regional tensions, particularly following the war between the United States, Israel, and Iran.

Impacts on Natural Gas Markets

Italian company Edison has announced that QatarEnergy will not be able to supply liquefied natural gas to this country until early December. Additionally, QatarEnergy has informed buyers in Bangladesh and Pakistan that cargo cancellations will continue until November. In the meantime, at least one Indian buyer has also been informed of the continuation of this situation.

Force majeure means the inability of one party to fulfill contractual obligations due to unforeseen circumstances. QatarEnergy first implemented this force majeure in early March, immediately after the outbreak of war in the region, due to the halt in production at its facilities in Ras Laffan and Mesaieed. These halts were caused by attacks from Iran on gas facilities and the impacts of the war on business operations.

Challenges in the Strait of Hormuz

The Strait of Hormuz, which is considered one of the most important energy transportation routes in the world, has faced serious challenges due to repeated attacks on commercial ships, including LNG tankers. This situation has not only harmed Qatar but has also affected natural gas markets globally, with its impacts rapidly spreading.

The continuation of this situation could lead to rising prices in global natural gas markets and also pose serious problems for countries dependent on liquefied natural gas imports. Experts believe that if this trend continues, countries like Italy and other European nations may seek alternative options for their energy supply.

QatarEnergy has also informed its buyers in other countries that if adverse conditions persist, more cargo cancellations may occur. This action could signify increased instability in energy supply in global markets.
