JD Vance, the Vice President of the United States, has recently urged Iran to take a "meaningful" reduction in its uranium enrichment capacity to demonstrate its commitment to not developing nuclear weapons. These remarks come as negotiations to end the seven-month war are ongoing, and some analysts believe this request could indicate a shift in U.S. policies.

Consequences of Iran's Nuclear Program

Vance stated in an interview with the media: "If Iran wants to show its commitment to not building nuclear weapons, it must take meaningful actions regarding its enrichment capacity." He emphasized that having fuel enriched to 60% is not logical for a country that intends to build nuclear weapons. These remarks reflect increasing U.S. pressure on Iran to reduce its nuclear program.

Iran had halted uranium enrichment since 2025, following U.S. airstrikes on its nuclear facilities in Isfahan, Fordow, and Natanz. However, the country has since denied international inspectors access to these facilities as well as to the underground facilities known as Peacock Mountain. This action has hindered the verification of enriched uranium stockpiles prior to the war based on estimates from the International Atomic Energy Agency.

The Role of the United States in Iran's Nuclear Policies

As the war in the region continues, analysts believe Vance's request may signify a change in the U.S. stance. Has the United States truly abandoned its previous requests for no enrichment? This question has arisen in political and diplomatic circles and could impact future negotiations.

Many experts believe that if Iran can demonstrate that it is seeking a sustainable and meaningful agreement regarding its nuclear program, it could help improve international relations and reduce tensions. However, the future of these negotiations remains uncertain and depends on Iran's reactions and future U.S. positioning.
