Russia did not show any signs of flexibility in its position regarding Ukraine during the G20 foreign ministers' negotiations held in Atlanta, United States. Tensions in these discussions, especially regarding the wars in Ukraine and Iran, were clearly evident among the members of this group.

Deep Disagreements Among G20 Members

Kaja Kallas, the European Union's foreign policy chief, made serious criticisms of Sergey Lavrov, the Russian foreign minister, accusing him of spreading "lies" about the Ukraine war. Kallas stated, "He made many misleading claims regarding issues related to the Ukraine war. We were able to resist these claims." European officials also sought to exert more pressure on Moscow, particularly in pursuit of a ceasefire in the Black Sea, which is a key route for agricultural exports.

Diplomatic Interactions and Reactions

In a press conference, Lavrov responded to European criticisms of their "arrogant sanctions" and praised the administration of Donald Trump, the former President of the United States, for its willingness to engage with Moscow. A diplomatic source reported that due to objections from some European officials regarding Lavrov's presence, the group photo of G20 foreign ministers was canceled. This comes as European countries have refrained from participating in group photos with Russian representatives at other G20 meetings this year.

The Atlanta meeting takes place ahead of the U.S. midterm elections and sets the stage for the G20 leaders' summit in December at Trump’s Doral resort in Miami. This meeting is also held under conditions where global energy prices have risen since the U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran in February. In response to these attacks, Tehran has blocked the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for oil and gas transportation.

The U.S. State Department aims to focus the discussions on economic growth, trade imbalances, and supply chains, including energy and critical minerals, but significant progress is not expected in this regard. Instead of issuing a final declaration, this two-day meeting is expected to conclude with a summary of the discussions prepared by the United States.
