Sami Abushadeh, leader of the Balad party, has withdrawn from the Israeli elections. This decision was made after the Israeli Supreme Court warned him that the majority of judges would support his disqualification if he did not voluntarily withdraw from the elections.
Political Background and Allegations
This is the first time the Israeli Supreme Court has indicated that it may agree to the Central Elections Committee's request for the disqualification of an Arab Israeli politician. Sami Abushadeh found himself in this situation due to statements he made regarding the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. He described this attack as "an important historical event." Right-wing parties accused him of supporting this attack, an allegation he has strongly denied.

Electoral Consequences
The upcoming elections on October 27, 2023, are the first Israeli elections following this attack, in which approximately 1,200 Israelis lost their lives according to Israeli statistics. The coalition government led by Benjamin Netanyahu, known as one of the most right-wing coalitions in Israel's history, has raised concerns about the representation of the Arab minority parties in Israel.
Abushadeh stated in an interview that he has a long history of supporting peace and human rights, which he claims has been overlooked by the court. He also remarked, "The margins for political activity and freedom of expression for the Arab-Palestinian minority in Israel are narrowing." He viewed the court's decision as indicative of the existence of two different laws for citizens based on their identity.
The Central Elections Committee voted in late September to disqualify Abushadeh, Ofer Cassif, and four other parties representing 20% of the Arab population in Israel. However, the Supreme Court recently overturned these bans for Cassif and the other four parties.
The Palestinian legal organization Adalah, which represents Abushadeh and other defendants, announced that he withdrew from candidacy to prevent a dangerous legal precedent. Abushadeh emphasized, "The Central Elections Committee that disqualified me due to an article did not disqualify other right-wing politicians with serious records."
Following the Hamas attack on Israel, Israeli forces launched attacks on the Gaza Strip, which local officials report have resulted in over 74,000 deaths. These attacks have created a humanitarian crisis in Gaza and have led to allegations of genocide against Israel.
