The Saudi-led coalition on Tuesday warned about the security of the two holy places of Islam, calling it a "red line." This warning came after Saudi air defense systems intercepted and destroyed a drone that had been launched towards Mecca.
Incident described as hostile act
According to coalition spokesman Brigadier General Turki al-Maliki, the incident has been described as a "hostile and terrorist act" and the drone was launched by the "Houthi terrorist militia." Al-Maliki considered this incident to be the second attempt to target Mecca, referencing a previous attempt on July 27, 2017, with a ballistic missile.

Consequences of the attempt to target Mecca
Al-Maliki described this incident as an attempt to target "the birthplace of revelation, the land of the prophet, and a destination that attracts millions of Muslims from around the world." He also considered this action an attempt to intimidate pilgrims and harm the citizens and residents of Mecca.
These statements come as accusations are intensifying between coalition forces and Houthis regarding military operations in Yemen. Houthi military spokesman Brigadier General Yahya Saree stated that Saudi fighter jets have carried out 52 airstrikes on civilian infrastructure in Taiz province in the past 24 hours.
Saree also claimed that these attacks have damaged civilian infrastructure including schools, bridges, and roads in Taiz province and other targets in Al-Jawf, Al-Bayda, Saada, and Amran provinces. These claims have not been independently verified in the statements reported.
He emphasized in this statement: "These brutal attacks will not go unanswered."
Recent developments come as conflicts in West Asia have expanded to Yemen and the Saudi-Houthi battlefield, increasing tensions around the strategic Bab al-Mandab Strait. Houthis also continue to target commercial vessels in the maritime corridor, making this route a critical point amid escalating regional tensions.
