Spain has declared three days of public mourning to grieve the victims of the deadly train crash that occurred on Wednesday. This accident, which took place in the Castilla-La Mancha region, resulted in the deaths of at least 68 people and injured around 50 others. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez stated at the scene of the incident: "All of Spain is in mourning" and added: "It is unacceptable for a country like Spain to endure two such tragedies in one year."

Details of the Accident and Reactions

The accident occurred at 9 AM on Wednesday, between the towns of Mora and Orgaz near Toledo. A high-speed train operated by Renfe collided with a private Irio train that had stopped on the route between Madrid and Seville. Local officials reported that around 540 people were on board the two trains. According to the latest information, at least 68 people have lost their lives and 107 are hospitalized in the Castilla-La Mancha region, of which 18 are in critical condition.

Social and Sports Impact

Following this tragedy, protests were held in Madrid demanding the resignation of the Spanish government, which turned violent. Far-right groups organized the demonstrations in front of the Ministry of Transport, with around 1500 participants. Protesters clashed with police, and law enforcement used tear gas to disperse the crowd.

The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) suspended over 20 matches, including Copa del Rey competitions scheduled for Wednesday, in honor of the accident victims. Spanish football clubs also expressed their condolences to the victims and their families through statements. FC Barcelona stated in a statement: "We offer our deepest condolences to the victims of this tragic incident."

European Union flags were also flown at half-mast in Brussels in a show of solidarity with Spain. This action was taken following Spain's declaration of three days of public mourning and reflects the support of European countries for one another.
