The Director General of MI5 (the UK's domestic security service) in his annual speech about the diverse threats to Britain, reported an increase in Iran's efforts to target harder objectives such as military bases in the country. He also referred to the escalation of Russia's hybrid warfare in response to supporters of Ukraine.
Increasing Threats from Iran
In this speech, Ken McCallum, the Director General of MI5, stated that state threats have quadrupled in the last decade and that the agency is now allocating more resources to this issue. He also warned about concerns related to the misuse of artificial intelligence, stating that terrorists may be able to develop biological weapons or even create new pathogens.
On Monday, Andy Burnham, the Prime Minister of Britain, announced that Tehran is likely behind a suspicious plot against RAF Fairford airbase. This base had previously been used by American bombers to carry out attacks on Iran, leading to a security emergency and an order for aircraft to leave the base by former U.S. President Donald Trump.
New Developments in Russian Threats
McCallum continued by referring to the threats from Russia, stating that the country is recognized as the "number one aggressor." He also mentioned the views of other European intelligence agencies that indicated Russia is using tactics that are somewhat on the brink of conventional war. For example, he referred to the unsuccessful attack on a cargo plane at an airport in Germany and also a cyber attack on Poland's energy infrastructure.
The Director General of MI5 added, "It is no coincidence that Russian aggressors are trying to destabilize other European countries at a time when their military progress in Ukraine is minimal and horrifically costly." These statements reflect serious concerns from Britain and other European countries regarding the increasing threats from Iran and Russia in the region.
