The United States government has allowed senior Iranian officials to attend the UN General Assembly in New York. This decision, despite ongoing tensions and conflicts between the two countries, has been made as part of the United States' commitments as the host of this international body.
Details of Iranian Officials' Attendance
A spokesperson for the U.S. State Department announced that "a main delegation from the Iranian regime" will be allowed to participate in this meeting. According to information obtained, Iranian officials, including Masoud Pezeshkian, the President, and Abbas Araghchi, the Foreign Minister, will receive the necessary visas to attend this conference.
The Trump administration has previously held negotiations with Iranian officials aimed at ending a conflict that began on February 28, following U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran. Tehran has also responded to these attacks by targeting Israeli and Gulf countries that host U.S. bases.
Travel Restrictions and Diplomatic Rights
The U.S. State Department spokesperson clarified that this delegation will be subject to travel restrictions and will be prohibited from purchasing luxury goods and other products. It was also noted that this delegation is smaller than last year.
In the past, the U.S. government did not allow Iranian delegations to shop from stores and restricted their movements to transferring between the UN headquarters, Iran's mission to the UN, and John F. Kennedy Airport in New York.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry has not yet responded to inquiries regarding this matter.
According to the "UN Headquarters Agreement" of 1947, the United States is generally obligated to allow access to the UN for foreign diplomats. However, Washington has stated that it can deny visas for security, terrorism, and foreign policy reasons.
The Trump administration also recently announced that it would not allow Palestinian officials to enter the UN meeting, a ban that has been in place since last year. This decision is due to actions they have taken to "internationalize the Israel-Palestine conflict," including pursuing cases against Israel in international courts. Mahmoud Abbas, the President of Palestine, has also had his visa rejected as part of this decision.
