The U.S. government, led by Donald Trump, is facing complex challenges in foreign policy ahead of the United Nations General Assembly. This meeting, scheduled for September 22, is seen as an opportunity for Trump to meet with leaders from 11 countries across four continents.
Trump's Meeting Agenda
Trump will begin the day with a speech to the representatives present at the General Assembly. Although the content of his speech is not yet clear, last year he delivered a controversial address and did not spare various countries from his criticisms regarding climate policies and immigration.
Following this, Trump will meet with major leaders such as Andy Burnham, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, and Delcy Rodríguez, the interim leader of Venezuela. Representatives from Gulf countries including the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Bahrain, Kuwait, and Qatar will also be present at this meeting.
International Challenges and Their Impacts
The long list of Trump's international meetings reflects his focus on foreign affairs during his second presidential term. Meanwhile, he has initiated several wars and faced challenges in relations with his old allies. The U.S. and Israel's war against Iran has particularly had significant impacts on global fuel prices and Trump's popularity domestically.
On Monday, polls indicated that public approval of Trump has dropped to its lowest point, at 32 percent. This comes as Republicans are also dissatisfied with his approach to managing living costs.
On the other hand, Trump's meetings with Gulf leaders have drawn special attention due to recent advances by the Houthis, a group supported by Iran. This group has captured large areas of Yemen and threatened attacks on Saudi Arabia, raising security concerns in the region.
Ultimately, Trump will sign an agreement with leaders from Denmark and Greenland aimed at increasing U.S. military presence on the island and limiting the influence of geopolitical rivals. Danish and Greenlandic officials hope this agreement will put an end to Trump's past claims about acquiring Greenland.
