The United States government, led by Donald Trump, announced that it has reached an agreement with Benjamin Netanyahu, the Prime Minister of Israel, under which the country's four billion dollar financial aid to Israel will cease at the end of this calendar year.

Details of the Trump-Netanyahu Agreement

The Trump administration stated in an interview with a news network that Israel no longer needs this financial aid and some Democratic and leftist politicians are using this financial support as a tool to criticize Republicans. Trump said, "We have agreed that we will not provide aid to Israel until the end of this year. If Israel needs help, we will be there for them."

Consequences of Stopping Financial Aid

It is worth noting that it is unclear what type of financial aid Trump was referring to. A memorandum of understanding that includes 3.8 billion dollars in annual military aid to Israel is set to expire soon, and negotiations are underway to determine how U.S. support for Israel will continue after this date. Trump also emphasized that Israel can purchase anything it wants and has no restrictions in this regard.

Netanyahu expressed hope in a May interview with CBS that Israel would gradually reduce its dependence on U.S. military support over the next decade. In a letter to a U.S. congressman, he wrote that the time has come for Israel to transition from being a recipient of aid to becoming a partner.

Public support for Israel in the United States has declined since the onset of the Gaza war in 2023, especially among Democrats. Recent polls have shown that a significant number of voters and Democrats believe that the U.S. provides excessive support to Israel. These changes reflect deep shifts in public opinion regarding Israeli policies and U.S. financial support for the country.

Trump added, "The left uses the four billion dollar payment that everyone is aware of as a sign of injustice, and we cannot allow that to happen." He clarified, "We were giving them four billion dollars, but this payment will be cut off at the end of the year, as they do not need it."
