The trial of 47 French citizens accused of membership in the terrorist group ISIS has begun in Iraq. These individuals are in the media spotlight as they are accused of committing crimes against people in Syria and Iraq during the rule of ISIS.

Background and Charges

The ISIS group, over the past decade, attracted many individuals from around the world to its ranks through extensive propaganda and imposed a strict regime over large parts of Syria and Iraq. The group suffered military defeats in Iraq in 2017 and in Syria in 2019.

Now, 47 French citizens who were transferred from Syria to Iraq last year are being tried for belonging to this group and committing various crimes. The trials have begun in the Karkh Criminal Court in Baghdad, and last week, this court issued prison sentences of up to 20 years for nine of the defendants.

Conditions and Statements of the Defendants

One 24-year-old defendant, who was taken to Syria by his mother over 10 years ago, was sentenced to 15 years in prison. He said in court: "I went to Syria, but it was my mother who chose for me. What is my fault?" Many of these individuals came from impoverished neighborhoods of large cities and had limited opportunities for life. They include generations of immigrants as well as those who converted to Islam.

The ISIS group imposed an extremist interpretation of Sharia and forced women and girls into sexual slavery, imprisoning or killing anyone who spoke out against the group's crimes. One defendant, Adel Bououn, 28, is accused of participating in ISIS operations in the cities of Aleppo and Palmyra and spoke about the harsh conditions in prisons controlled by the Kurds in Syria.

Human rights organizations have criticized the judicial process, describing it as rushed. They believe that many of the defendants' confessions were obtained under pressure and threat.

Meanwhile, French lawyers representing many of these defendants have called for their return to France for trial in their home country. Currently, observers, representatives of the French embassy, and journalists are present at these trials, and there are concerns about the issuance of death sentences for some of the defendants.

These trials are considered a sensitive issue in international relations and regional security, and their continuation has attracted significant attention.
