The USS George H.W. Bush (USS George H.W. Bush) arrived at the resort island of Phuket in Thailand on Sunday. The carrier, with approximately 4,800 personnel, has traveled to this country for rest and recreation after six months of supporting U.S. operations in the Middle East.
Past Operations in the Middle East
Over the past six months, this aircraft carrier and its strike group have supported Operation Epic Fury and the U.S. maritime blockade in the area of responsibility of U.S. Central Command. The aim of these operations has been to ensure maritime security and stability in the Middle East.
Phuket is the first port that the USS George H.W. Bush has visited after departing from Norfolk, Virginia, and Mayport, Florida, in March. This visit is planned as an important stop for the crew to participate in cultural and social activities in Phuket, including sightseeing and a football match between the U.S. and Thailand.
Social and Cultural Activities in Phuket
The aircraft carrier has anchored in coastal waters and crew members are expected to come ashore through Phuket's deep-water port to spend time on this popular southern island from October 4 to 9. Some sailors have also come ashore by boat.
This visit follows a five-day stop of the USS Abraham Lincoln at Laem Chabang in eastern Thailand last month. During that visit, about 5,000 sailors and Marines came to Thailand. A local mayor has estimated that each U.S. service member from the Lincoln could spend up to 3,000 baht (approximately $89) per day during this visit.
Thailand is recognized as the only treaty ally of the United States in mainland Southeast Asia, and this visit helps strengthen military and cultural relations between the two countries.
