Vietnam and four European countries outside the European Union (EU) signed a free trade agreement in Hanoi on Sunday. This agreement aims to diversify markets and address disruptions caused by U.S. tariffs on global trade. The agreement between the fastest-growing economy in Southeast Asia and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), whose members include Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland, addresses the elimination or reduction of tariffs on goods including industrial products, fish, and agricultural products.

Signing of the Agreement in the Presence of Senior Vietnamese Officials

The agreement was signed in the presence of To Lam, the senior leader of Vietnam, and representatives of EFTA governments. The Vietnamese government stated in a statement that this agreement reflects the parties' willingness to "strengthen the rules-based trading system amid ongoing fluctuations in the global economy." The agreement is also expected to serve as a tool for Vietnam to "diversify its import and export markets" and "deepen integration into global value chains."

Background and Negotiation Process

The roadmap for negotiations between Vietnam and EFTA was finalized in July, more than a decade after official talks began in 2012. Negotiations, which had stalled in 2018, resumed last September. This agreement comes in the wake of U.S. tariff actions under the presidency of Donald Trump, which have imposed heavy tariffs on Vietnam's exports to the United States, while negotiations with Washington continue.

The free trade agreement with EFTA allows Vietnam to access new markets and helps reduce dependence on the U.S. market. This is particularly important given the current challenges faced by the United States as a major trading partner for Vietnam. Additionally, this agreement could enhance the competitiveness of Vietnamese products and improve the country's position in the global market.

Ultimately, this agreement could strengthen economic and diplomatic relations between Vietnam and European countries and create new opportunities for investment and trade cooperation. Given recent developments in global trade, this agreement is seen as a positive step towards establishing a sustainable and diverse trading system.
