In October 2023, the Suez Canal in Egypt recorded a revenue of $724 million, marking a 94% increase compared to the same period last year. This increase, despite the existing geopolitical challenges in the region, heralds a remarkable improvement in the state of maritime trade.
Revenue and Traffic Details
According to Osama Rabie, the head of the Suez Canal Authority, this revenue increase rose from $373 million in October 2022 to $724 million in October 2023. Additionally, the number of vessels passing through the canal increased to 1,490, showing a 32% growth compared to 1,128 vessels in October 2022. Future Outlook
Rabie predicted that this upward trend will continue and that major shipping lines will return to using this canal. The importance of the Suez Canal in global trade and supply chains is undeniable, and these changes will contribute to improving Egypt's economic situation and strengthening the country's position in the international arena.
In other words, the high revenue of the Suez Canal not only reflects Egypt's commercial successes but can also serve as an important indicator in assessing the economic status of the region. While Houthi attacks in the Red Sea pose a threat to maritime transport, the positive performance of the Suez Canal indicates the resilience of this waterway.
