Abdullah Al-Aleimi Bawazir, a member of Yemen's Presidential Leadership Council, called for U.S. military support to counter the Houthi group, which is rapidly advancing along Yemen's Red Sea coast with Iranian backing, on Wednesday in New York.
Need for Military and Security Support
Bawazir emphasized in a conversation with reporters on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, "We definitely need U.S. military and security support." When asked whether the Yemeni government is seeking direct military attacks from the U.S. or another type of military assistance, he refrained from providing further details. However, he stressed the necessity of "mutual coordination in intelligence and security matters."
Importance of Supporting Yemeni Forces
Bawazir also added, "Air operations are very important, but supporting the Yemeni government and ground forces is truly a guarantee to end the threat posed by these militias." Yemen has been embroiled in intense conflict since 2014, when the Houthis ousted the internationally recognized government and seized the capital, Sana'a, and large parts of the north of the country. The following year, a Saudi-led military coalition intervened, and the conflict quickly turned into a regional proxy war.
Recent Houthi attacks have violated the UN-brokered ceasefire that had been in effect since April 2022, severely worsening the humanitarian situation in Yemen. Bawazir noted that this situation requires immediate attention from the international community, especially the United States.
Currently, millions of people in Yemen are in need of humanitarian assistance due to ongoing conflict and the resulting humanitarian crisis. Bawazir also called on the global community to respond to this humanitarian crisis and continue supporting the Yemeni government.
