The province of Alberta in Canada recently voted against a proposal to hold an independence referendum, and this result is regarded as an initial defeat for separatists supported by allies of former U.S. President Donald Trump. Early predictions indicate that supporters of national unity won this vote with over 76 percent of the ballots, while at least one-third of the votes have been counted.

Prime Minister Mark Carney's Role

Prime Minister Mark Carney emphasized that holding this vote occurred at the "worst possible time" and stressed the need for national stability amid Trump's trade war and annexation threats.

At a restaurant in Edmonton where a group of separatists was watching the results, Jeffrey Roth, one of the prominent leaders of the Alberta Prosperity Project, told reporters that the push for Alberta's independence will "certainly" continue. He added, "We have learned many lessons from this struggle."

Reactions to the Vote Outcome

In contrast, Thomas Lukaszuk, head of the "Always Canadian" group advocating for national unity, said, "It was amazing to see the enthusiasm and will of the people of Canada."

Daniel Smith, the Premier of Alberta and a member of the Conservative Party, announced that she voted against independence but considered the purpose of holding this referendum to address an issue that has divided the province. She emphasized that the victory of unity supporters would put an end to the separation issue.

Alberta is known for having the fourth-largest oil reserves in the world, and a significant portion of the separatists' motivation stems from dissatisfaction with Ottawa's management of the oil industry. Smith believes that Carney's successor, Justin Trudeau, has been seeking to limit oil production to advance his environmental agenda. The call for separation has also received ongoing attention from Trump's allies. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Basset referred to Alberta as a "natural partner" for the United States, and famous billionaire Elon Musk tweeted this month that Alberta "should separate."

Carney, who grew up in Alberta, has made efforts to improve relations between the province and Ottawa since taking office last year. He has collaborated with Smith on a new project to export more Alberta bitumen abroad, a project that seemed impossible under Trudeau's management. Mitch Silvestre, leader of the Alberta Prosperity Project, told reporters before the results were announced that Carney had threatened the province with a message stating that "voting against Canada is dangerous," which he called "very unfair."

Holly Erdgaard, 44, who voted in Edmonton, did not feel comfortable with the separatists' claims that Alberta shares too much of its oil resources with the rest of Canada. She said, "I think we need to work a little more on collaboration before making hasty decisions to start our own country."
