Ahmed Attaf, Minister of State and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Algeria, addressed various issues including the Security Council, restoring trust among countries, and the regional situation during his speech at the eighty-first United Nations General Assembly.

The Necessity of Rebuilding International Trust

Attaf, referring to the official slogan of the eighty-first General Assembly session "Rebuilding Trust, Managing Change," stated: The fundamental question is how we can rebuild trust. With the intensification of crises around the world, trust among countries diminishes, and the logic of force re-emerges, disregarding agreements and consensus.

He emphasized: What trust in international law can remain when the aggressor is given the right to self-defense? Given current developments, reforming the United Nations system is essential. There is a greater need for a system based on fairness and justice; it is impossible to speak of international peace and security as long as the system of international relations prefers wars. Algeria calls for strengthening the role of the General Assembly and deep reform of the Security Council to become an institution with greater justice and efficiency.

Concerns about Tensions in the Persian Gulf

The Algerian Foreign Minister added: The Persian Gulf and Middle East region is at one of its most dangerous historical stages, not due to the scale of destruction left by consecutive wars but because of the erosion of separating borders, which is unacceptable in relations between countries. Algeria is concerned about the escalation of tensions in the Persian Gulf, as wars weigh heavily on the countries of the region and their nations, threatening their stability, security, and prosperity.

Attaf also condemned the continued aggressions of Israel against the countries of the region, especially Syria and Lebanon, and its attempts to fragment the brotherly country of Somalia, emphasizing the necessity of respecting international laws. He reiterated Algeria's full support for the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people and their right to establish an independent state with full sovereignty.

In conclusion, Attaf referred to Algeria's support for the people of Western Sahara to determine their own fate and also highlighted the situation in Libya, emphasizing that the Libyan people can determine their own destiny through their will.
