Belgrade, October 28 - An armed attacker with two knives injured a police officer responsible for protecting the Israeli embassy in Belgrade. Following this attack, the police officer shot the assailant, killing him.

Incident Details

Ivica Dačić, the Minister of Internal Affairs of Serbia, stated in an email announcement that an unidentified individual, likely from the town of Šabac in western Serbia, attacked one of the gendarmerie officers while shouting 'Allahu Akbar.' This armed individual attacked the officer with two knives, throwing one of the knives at him, which caused injury to the officer's left cheek.

Police Response and Security Situation

The police officer, identified by the initials 'D.S.', used his weapon after the attack, firing several shots at the assailant and killing him at the scene. According to the Belgrade Public Prosecutor's Office, this action by the police has been recognized as legitimate self-defense, and investigations are ongoing.

Minister Dačić also reported an increase in the security threat level in Serbia to the highest possible level and announced that more police forces would be deployed in key areas of the city. This incident marks the second attack on the Israeli embassy in Belgrade in the past two years. In June 2024, an assailant with a crossbow injured a Serbian police officer at this location.

This attack occurred just one day after elections in Israel, with projected results indicating a close competition between the opposition bloc and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's camp. Meanwhile, a student movement in Serbia has challenged the country's former leader, Aleksandar Vučić, in the elections held on Sunday, but the current government will remain in power until a new government is formed.
