Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel's Prime Minister and one of the country's most experienced politicians, is confronting serious challenges in the upcoming election on Tuesday. This election comes as he must prove to voters that he is still the only reliable option for ensuring Israel's security.

Security Challenges and Strong Rivals

Netanyahu's reputation as a security leader has been severely questioned following the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023. His main rival, Gadi Eisenkot, former head of the Israel Defense Forces, is capitalizing on public anger over security failures and is closely competing with Netanyahu in the polls.

Using international support, especially from former U.S. President Donald Trump, Netanyahu is trying to present himself as the only suitable option for leadership. He has pointed out the dangers posed by the victory of his rivals and highlighted concerns about the formation of a Palestinian state, which the majority of Israelis oppose.

Campaign Strategies and Political Approaches

Netanyahu's election campaign is heavily focused on one slogan: "Either Right or Palestine." He hopes to project a positive image of himself by relying on military successes against Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon. This comes as he faces an international arrest warrant due to war crime allegations in Gaza and a major corruption case.

Born on October 21, 1949, in Tel Aviv, Netanyahu was ideologically influenced by his father, Benzion Netanyahu. He opposed the Israel-Palestine peace process in the 1990s and is now seeking to expand Israel's borders to Jordan. He has also supported the annexation of parts of the West Bank and emphasizes the growth of Israeli settlements, which are considered illegal under international law.

With his military background, which includes serving in an Israeli commando unit and participating in the 1973 Arab-Israeli War, he has consistently stressed the importance of military power for Israel's security. He views Hamas's rule in Gaza as a tool to weaken the Palestinian Authority and create division among Palestinians.

Meanwhile, criticisms of his policies continue, and his rivals, including Eisenkot, accuse him of being unfit to remain in the prime minister's office. Eisenkot has told the media: "He injects hatred and fear into society and portrays his rivals as enemies of Israel."

However, Netanyahu still has powerful supporters, and it seems that his efforts to maintain power continue. In a recent interview, he emphasized the importance of this election, stating: "The existential interests of the Jewish state are at stake in this election, and to ensure that, we must vote for someone capable of doing so."
