Britain is providing military support to Saudi Arabia in the face of Iranian-backed Houthi attacks from Yemen. Ben Wallace, the UK Defense Secretary, announced that this action is intended to bolster Britain's "national security."
Aerial Support for Saudi Arabia
The British government confirmed that a military tanker aircraft will be deployed to provide "defensive" aerial refueling to Saudi fighter jets. This decision was made following the Saudis' request for military support in light of increased drone and missile attacks by the Houthis.

Cooperation in Dangerous Times
Wallace stated in an interview: "In dangerous times, good friends must stand together." He also emphasized that this support will be in accordance with international humanitarian law. The use of the RAF Voyager tanker, which is usually stationed at RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus, will begin in the coming days, and officials expect this mission to last for several weeks.
This mission includes refueling British Typhoon jets currently being used by Saudi Arabia. Additionally, this support will complement the Sky Sabre air defense system that was previously deployed by Britain in Saudi Arabia.
Andy Burnham, the UK Prime Minister, announced this new military support during his trip to the United Nations General Assembly in New York. He will meet with Saudi Foreign Minister, Prince Faisal bin Farhan, at a side event. Burnham stated that this action is aimed at "securing Britain's interests" as well as those in the Middle East, emphasizing the need to maintain "open routes."
In this context, G7 countries have also urged the Houthis to cease their attacks on Saudi Arabia. These attacks pose a threat to global trade and have driven up energy prices.
As the largest oil exporter, Saudi Arabia is heavily dependent on the strategic straits of Hormuz and Bab al-Mandab. Since 2015, it has led a coalition supporting the internationally recognized Yemeni government, and this intervention has exacerbated the war and humanitarian crisis in this impoverished country.
