Britain, as a defense partner for Kuwait, has elevated its military cooperation from a historical security commitment to a modern strategic partnership based on mutual trust and Kuwait's defensive capabilities. Sir Michael Weston, the British ambassador in Kuwait, emphasized in his speech at the opening of a photography exhibition documenting key stages of British-Kuwaiti defense relations that Britain's role today is to support Kuwait in enhancing its defensive capabilities, rather than acting as a protector. He stated, 'Britain is no longer Kuwait's protector. Kuwait defends itself today.'
History of Defense Relations
Weston traced the long-standing relationship between the two countries back to 1899, noting that this relationship has faced numerous security and military challenges over the years. He pointed out that this relationship has undergone significant phases since the military challenges of the early 20th century, the two World Wars, Kuwait's journey towards independence in the 1960s, and the Iraqi invasion in 1990-1991. Recent regional developments have once again highlighted the depth of this historical relationship and the importance of continuing defense cooperation.

The Role of Strategic Communications and Media
The British ambassador also emphasized the importance of strategic communications during wars and crises, stating that the way messages are conveyed can be as important as the messages themselves. He reminded that conflicting parties often try to portray societies as divided and vulnerable, and therefore it is essential for different countries not only to maintain their defensive capabilities but also to demonstrate their unity, cohesion, and resilience.
Weston referred to the experience of former British ambassador Sir Michael Weston, who remained in Kuwait during the Iraqi invasion and showed that public understanding can be a crucial factor in times of crisis. He also mentioned the role of the media as one of the key pillars in communication and information dissemination, stating that without media, public access to information would be limited.
This exhibition includes images documenting various stages of military and defense relations between Britain and Kuwait and is designed as an effort to strengthen engagement and awareness of the shared military history of the two countries.
