The Role of Treasury Bills in Oman's Economy
Treasury bills, as high-security short-term financial instruments, are issued by the Ministry of Finance of Oman and allow licensed commercial banks to effectively invest their excess funds. The Central Bank of Oman, as the manager of the issuance of these bills, assists banks by providing liquidity facilities through discounts and repurchase agreements (Repo).
The interest rate on Repo operations with the Central Bank of Oman is 4.50%, and the discount rate on treasury bill discount facilities is 5.00%. These rates enable banks to continue their economic activities by facilitating financing.
Moreover, the issuance of treasury bills creates a benchmark yield curve for short-term interest rates in the local money market. This action also allows the government to utilize this instrument for financing its current expenses when needed.
