China has sent two giant pandas from the southwestern city of Chengdu to the Atlanta Zoo in Georgia. This action is in line with an agreement between the governments of China and the United States and demonstrates the diplomatic cooperation between the two countries.

Historic Agreement and Symbol of Friendship

Xi Jinping, the President of China, announced that this giant panda is being transferred as part of China's panda loan program to the United States. This program, considered a symbol of friendship between the people of China and the United States, was signed on the sidelines of a three-day summit that Xi had with former U.S. President Donald Trump. This agreement was one of the few tangible outcomes of this summit and reflects China's efforts to use its cultural symbols in soft diplomacy.

Details of the Transfer and Preparation of Atlanta Zoo

The giant pandas, Ping Ping and Fu Shuang, both born in 2020, will be loaned to the Atlanta Zoo for 10 years. These two young pandas lived at the Chengdu Panda Breeding Research Base. Before the animals' departure, a farewell ceremony was held, attended by zoo team members and local officials.

The panda section of the Atlanta Zoo has been renovated to welcome these two giant pandas, and a sustainable supply of local bamboo for their feeding has been ensured. The Atlanta Zoo has experience in caring for giant pandas from 1999 to 2024, and therefore is well-prepared to host these two fascinating creatures.

The flight of the giant pandas was conducted on a Boeing 777 managed by FedEx. This aircraft was equipped with steamers for corn, bamboo shoots, and carrots to meet the dietary needs of the giant pandas. Additionally, experienced zookeepers from the United States, who had previously traveled to China, accompanied the two giant pandas during the journey.

This transfer is not only a cultural and diplomatic action but may also help strengthen relations between the two countries in the future. China traditionally uses giant pandas as a tool in its soft diplomacy, and in times of heightened tensions, it may cancel similar agreements and repatriate giant pandas from other countries.
