The Chinese-Saudi consortium, which includes IKK Fangda JV Co., has signed a contract worth 1.15 billion Saudi riyals (equivalent to $306 million) for the design and construction of a new World Cup stadium in Qiddiya. This agreement was signed on October 18, 2023, and demonstrates Saudi Arabia's commitment to advancing its long-term goals in the sports and entertainment fields.

Contract Details

IKK Fangda JV Co., which is 51% owned by the Chinese company Shihui International Holdings and 49% owned by the Saudi company Isam Kabbani & Partners, is responsible for designing, supplying, and installing the external façade systems of the Mohammed bin Salman Stadium. The project includes the construction of the main stadium building as well as a museum and ancillary buildings. According to Fangda's stock market announcement, the completion of this project is expected within 863 days.

Stadium Features

The new stadium, designed to accommodate over 45,000 people, features a view of the Tuwaiq cliffs and is considered one of the main venues for hosting the 2034 FIFA World Cup matches in Saudi Arabia. This project is part of Saudi Arabia's extensive plans to become a global sports and entertainment hub.

Despite Houthi attacks disrupting its sports and entertainment plans, Saudi Arabia continues its efforts to develop sports infrastructure. This stadium is envisioned not only as a sports venue but also as a tourist attraction that could help increase tourist presence in the area.

Economic and Social Implications

This contract signifies close cooperation between Saudi Arabia and China and could help strengthen the economic ties between the two countries. Additionally, the implementation of this project could lead to the creation of new jobs and the development of local infrastructure in Qiddiya, ultimately benefiting the regional economy.

Overall, the stadium project in Qiddiya represents an important step towards realizing Saudi Arabia's sports and entertainment dreams, and it is hoped that it will successfully come to fruition and be recognized as a symbol of the country's progress on the global stage.
