An Italian court in Rome on Monday convicted three Egyptian security officials for their role in the kidnapping and murder of Giulio Regeni, an Italian student. This graduate student from the University of Cambridge went missing in Cairo on January 25, 2016, and his body was found days later showing signs of severe torture.

Conviction and Prison Sentences

The three security officials, including Colonel Magdy Sherif from Egypt's General Intelligence Service, Colonel Hisham Helmy, and Colonel Ather Kamal, the former head of investigations in Cairo, were sentenced to 10 years in prison. Meanwhile, Major General Tarek Sabir, the former head of state security, was acquitted of the same charges. The judge stated in his ruling that these individuals were found guilty of kidnapping Regeni.

Background and Case Details

Regeni was kidnapped while researching labor unions, a sensitive topic in Egypt, and was increasingly subjected to torture. Prosecutors had requested life imprisonment for Magdy Sherif and 17 years and six months for the other three defendants. However, the judge only sentenced the three to 10 years in prison.

The head of the Rome prosecutor's office, Francesco Lo Voi, told reporters: "We achieved this result despite not very serious cooperation from the Egyptian authorities." The four were tried in absentia under Italian laws that allow for the prosecution of crimes committed abroad against Italian citizens.

Egyptian officials have consistently denied allegations of state involvement in Regeni's death, claiming that the crime was committed by a criminal gang. Initially, investigations were conducted jointly by Italian and Egyptian prosecutors, but the parties soon reached different conclusions.

This case, in addition to its legal aspects, has political and social dimensions and has fueled challenges in relations between Italy and Egypt. While Italy seeks answers to this crime, Egypt faces internal and international challenges in dealing with criticisms.
