Yemen is in a critical condition, with the World Food Programme (WFP) stating that the number of people unable to secure their food needs has reached its highest level. This situation is a result of escalating conflicts between Saudi Arabia and the Iran-backed Houthi group, which has been unprecedented since the major border attacks were halted under UN supervision in 2022.

Impact of Conflicts on Food Security

The new conflicts have displaced tens of thousands and could change control over Yemen. These changes could have serious consequences for shipping routes in the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandab Strait. Reports indicate that in recent weeks, the number of people in government-controlled areas unable to secure their food needs has reached an unprecedented record, with three-quarters of households forced to skip meals.

Concerning Statistics and Their Consequences

The total population of government-controlled areas in Yemen is estimated to be around 10 million. Matthew Hollingworth, Deputy Executive Director of the World Food Programme for Programme Operations, stated in a press conference in Geneva and via video conference from Rome: "The impact of this new wave of insecurity on food security could be devastating." These warnings come as the food needs of the people of Yemen are sharply increasing, and lack of access to food has turned into a humanitarian crisis.

As the war continues and the humanitarian crisis escalates, the need for immediate and effective action in humanitarian aid and food supply programs is more urgent than ever. The World Food Programme has called for international attention and broader cooperation to address this crisis.
