The 2027 AFC Asian Cup, which was set to take place in Saudi Arabia from January 7 to February 5, 2027, has been postponed due to "exceptional circumstances" in the region. The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) announced that the tournament will now be held from December 23, 2027, to January 21, 2028, with three host cities: Jeddah, Riyadh, and Al Khobar.
Reasons for the Delay in the Tournament
The Asian Football Confederation stated in a statement that "the organizing committee of the Asian Cup decided to change the timing of this important national tournament, which is due to exceptional circumstances arising from regional developments." The organization also referred to "logistical complexities and travel disruptions" and added that the new dates for the tournament will be submitted to FIFA for approval.

This decision was made after "extensive discussions and close consultations" with Saudi officials. Last month, local organizers emphasized that the Asian Cup was "scheduled," despite growing concerns about the security situation in Saudi Arabia and the Middle East.
Security and Economic Implications
The Asian Football Confederation stated in its announcement: "Exceptional conditions have arisen for organizing and holding this competition as initially planned, and the delay in holding these matches is necessary for the benefit of all participating teams, officials, spectators, and other stakeholders."
Attacks by Houthi rebels from Yemen, supported by Iran, on Saudi infrastructure, including airports, have increased since the resumption of hostilities. The Houthis are at war with a Saudi-led coalition that supports the internationally recognized Yemeni government. This civil war has reignited since July after a years-long ceasefire.
In this context, the Dakar Rally 2027 was also moved from Saudi Arabia to another location last month. An exhibition tennis tour that was supposed to include Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz, and Alexander Zverev has been postponed to late December. Additionally, the WTA Finals, which were to be held in Riyadh, will instead take place in Indian Wells, USA.
