A 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck on Thursday night in Tibet, located in southwestern China, resulting in the deaths of at least 16 people and injuries to 32 others. This earthquake, the strongest in the region in the past five years, has caused significant damage to homes and local infrastructure.
Damage and Emergency Conditions
According to reports, hundreds of homes in this remote Himalayan region have been destroyed due to the intensity of the earthquake. Local officials reported that at least 339 residential buildings and 20 barns were damaged as a result of the quake. Among the injured, 11 are in critical condition. Rescue efforts have begun, and officials are assessing the extent of the damage caused by this incident.

Infrastructure Impact and Regional Status
Reports indicate that power and communication lines in the area have also been severely affected. The epicenter of the earthquake is located about 190 kilometers northeast of Nagqu, which is itself about 300 kilometers from the Tibetan capital, Lhasa. The earthquake's depth reaches 10 kilometers, making this type of earthquake more dangerous and destructive.
Earthquakes are relatively common in China. In January 2025, an earthquake near the summit of Everest in the Tingri region of Tibet resulted in the deaths of at least 126 people. Additionally, in 2010, a 7.1 magnitude earthquake in Qinghai province, neighboring Tibet, claimed the lives of 2,698 people.
Officials are currently coordinating relief operations and providing basic needs for the affected individuals. This incident once again emphasizes the importance of preparedness for natural disasters in earthquake-prone areas and highlights the need to strengthen earthquake-resistant infrastructure.
