The election debate between Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Flavio Bolsonaro, two presidential candidates in Brazil, took place on Sunday in São Paulo. In this debate, the two rivals engaged in a personal accusation exchange and severe criticisms, highlighting the divisive and competitive atmosphere of the elections in this country. This debate occurred one week before the second round of Brazil's presidential elections and clearly revealed the tension and bias among the parties.
Developments and Mutual Accusations
In this debate, Bolsonaro, the right-wing senator and son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, attacked Lula with a sharp tone and numerous criticisms. He accused Lula of lying and corruption while trying to pressure him with unusual and threatening gestures in front of the camera. Lula referred to Bolsonaro as a "habitual liar" and "criminal" and pointed to his connections with paramilitary groups in Rio de Janeiro.

Economic and Social Issues
This debate was dedicated to heated discussions about economic issues, public safety, healthcare, and corruption in Brazil. Bolsonaro, addressing the main concerns of Brazilians, including the cost of living and crime, accused Lula of trying to regain power through reckless spending. Lula also questioned Bolsonaro about his plans to reduce costs in the style of Argentina's libertarian President, Javier Milei, which had led to increased unemployment and reduced social services. Bolsonaro repeatedly avoided answering this question.
In this debate, Lula also criticized Bolsonaro's relationship with former U.S. President Donald Trump and his plans to "hand over" Brazil's rare minerals to American interests. Lula pointed out that "it is strange that the Bolsonaro family serves American interests."
Former President Jair Bolsonaro was referenced during the debate, especially when his son asked Lula why so many prisoners supported him. Lula stated that he seeks the vote of everyone, including Jair Bolsonaro, who is currently sentenced to 27 years of house arrest for attempting a coup and after losing the 2022 elections.
Before the debate, thousands of supporters of both candidates gathered in various cities across Brazil. In São Paulo, a crowd of Bolsonaro supporters welcomed him wearing the yellow and green colors of the Brazilian flag. In Rio de Janeiro, swimmers at Praia Vermelha wrote Lula's name in the water with their bodies, and at Copacabana beach, famous singer Caetano Veloso led a "rally for democracy" in favor of Lula.
