History and Purpose of EGR
EGRs, which were introduced on May 4, 2026, with live trading starting on May 18, function as intangible securities representing ownership of physical gold stored in SEBI-approved warehouses. This milestone has been achieved as the exchange seeks to expand the range of investment options for participants through regulated electronic platforms.
EGR trading allows investors to hold and trade gold electronically while the physical gold is stored in authorized warehouses. This development on Dhanteras, when demand for gold traditionally increases, is particularly significant.
Trading data shows that the EGR contract started at a price of 1,460 rupees per unit and reached a daily high of 1,460 rupees, while the lowest price was 1,450.20 rupees. The last traded price was 1,456 rupees, reflecting a decrease of 118 rupees or 7.5% from its previous close of 1,574 rupees.
This record trading volume indicates the potential of electronic gold instruments to expand their presence in the Indian gold market, especially as investors seek regulated options instead of traditional physical purchases.
The EGR segment of the National Stock Exchange of India is part of broader efforts to develop an organized market for electronic gold that offers transparency and exchange-based trading mechanisms for gold transactions.
