Erin Patterson, 52, was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole on Friday in the Victoria Court of Appeal for the murder of three of her relatives. This sentence was issued in response to her "cold and calculated" murders.
Details of the Murder Case
Patterson was convicted in 2023 for the intentional poisoning of her family’s lunch with toxic mushrooms, resulting in the murders of her husband’s parents and his aunt. She claimed that these convictions were a "miscarriage of justice" and requested the Court of Appeal to either release her or order a new trial.

However, the Court of Appeal rejected her request, stating that her murders were "carefully planned and intentional" and deserved a harsher punishment. Judge Stephen McLeish remarked: "This crime was extremely cold and calculated and must be condemned in the strongest terms." Patterson had initially been sentenced to life imprisonment with the possibility of parole after 33 years.
Investigations and Trial
In July 2023, Patterson hosted a lunch for four people at her home in Victoria: Don and Gail Patterson, her husband Simon's parents, and Simon's maternal aunt, Heather Wilkinson, along with her husband Ian, who was a well-known local priest. Don, Gail, and Heather died within a week due to organ failure, while Ian became seriously ill but survived. Patterson was convicted of three counts of murder and one count of attempted murder. She has always claimed that the food was accidentally contaminated.
During the appeal hearing, her lawyers argued that the trial was seriously flawed, including issues such as jury members staying in a hotel shared with police witnesses. However, prosecutors believed that the 33-year sentence without parole was "clearly insufficient" and that these crimes represented "betrayal" and the worst kind of criminal behavior.
The trial, which lasted 11 weeks, attracted global attention and became one of the most high-profile criminal cases in Australia. The motives behind these murders remain unclear.
