Marco Rubio, the U.S. Secretary of State, gathers G20 foreign ministers for discussions in Atlanta, Georgia. This meeting takes place as ongoing wars in Ukraine and Iran and rising energy prices create tensions among members.

Tensions and Challenges

The G20 foreign ministers' meeting, which includes countries such as China, India, Russia, Japan, Germany, and France, is held just days before the U.S. midterm elections and is expected to set the stage for the G20 leaders' summit in December in Miami. It seems unlikely that significant agreements will be reached by G20 members this week, as these officials face deep divisions stemming from Russia's war in Ukraine and its consequences on relations with Iran.

Impact of Sanctions and Diplomacy

Russia has faced extensive sanctions from Western countries following its invasion of Ukraine in 2022, and Sergey Lavrov, the Russian Foreign Minister, is also under these sanctions. Rubio's meeting with Lavrov, which is tense in itself, will be closely monitored, as Washington seeks to pursue diplomacy regarding Ukraine while also engaging Moscow's cooperation in controlling fuel prices.

A diplomatic source stated that "the G20 is no longer really a forum where foreign ministers can agree on a statement," and the Miami summit is seen more as a display of U.S. power and its commitments to economic growth, trade liberalization, and business.

Instead of a final statement, a summary of this week's meeting, prepared by the United States, is expected to be released. The Trump administration, which is set to hand over the G20's rotating leadership to the United Kingdom, believes that this platform has strayed from its original mission.

In Atlanta, discussions will focus on supply chain and energy challenges, alongside identifying ways to collectively address the impacts of geopolitical tensions on economic security. According to a U.S. State Department official, "these discussions will provide an opportunity to talk about energy access and the impacts of immediate crises on trade."
