France woke up on Sunday to devastated streets following intense clashes between police and protesters, widespread looting, and fires. Saturday's protests against rising living costs turned into 'extreme' violence against the government. This unrest has occurred after weeks of student protests and six months before the elections to choose a successor to Emmanuel Macron.
Widespread Destruction and Numerous Arrests
Emmanuel Grégoire, the Mayor of Paris, announced that entire streets in the capital have been 'destroyed' and groups of masked youths set parked cars on fire and looted stores. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu condemned the 'extreme' severity of the violence, stating that 1,200 people have been arrested and 150 police officers injured. He added, 'It is a miracle that the casualties are not higher.'

Wave of Unrest and Public Protests
This violence began on the fringes of protests in Paris and other cities over the cost of living. The Ministry of the Interior reported that 550,000 people participated in these protests, while the CGT union claimed the number of participants was 800,000. Police fired tear gas and water cannons at the protesters, during which a 17-year-old boy in Saint-Étienne lost his right hand due to a crowd control grenade.
During and after these protests, groups of youths violently clashed with police, setting fires and looting stores. Dozens of stores in Paris, Marseille, Nice, Nantes, Bordeaux, Limoges, Lille, Toulouse, and Strasbourg were looted. Journalists in Paris observed groups of youths systematically attacking stores, using masks and gloves to disable security cameras and break windows.
Macron emphasized that 'those who engage in destruction and looting, even in municipalities, will be prosecuted and punished.' In the United States, J.D. Vance, the Vice President, attributed the unrest to immigration.
