Nationwide protests in France will be held on Tuesday led by student groups and labor unions. Tens of thousands are expected to take to the streets to address the existing problems in the French educational system.

Reasons for Student Protests

These protests are part of a movement that has emerged in recent weeks, calling for President Emmanuel Macron's attention to issues such as staff shortages and lack of financial resources in the educational system. Since late September, hundreds of high school entrances have been blocked by protesting students. These students complain about inadequate learning conditions, including teacher absences, overcrowded curricula, and dilapidated buildings.

Reactions to the Protests

While many protests have been conducted peacefully, some protesters have set fire to trash bins, vandalized bus shelters, and clashed with riot police. In this context, authorities have been accused of using disproportionate force against protesters, especially children. The country's Ministry of Justice announced that since the protests began, 5,060 people have been arrested, 87% of whom are minors.

Without providing specific details, the Ministry of Justice stated that over 1,800 individuals are facing various charges, including 1,483 who are underage. However, some of the 790 cases have already been dismissed. Labor unions and human rights groups have strongly criticized police behavior and called for an investigation into the matter.

Allegations of Police Violence

Interior Minister Laurent Nunez announced on Monday that the police have launched 10 internal investigations into allegations of violence against protesters. Among the reports, a 15-year-old lost his hand during protests in the city of Lens, and a 16-year-old in the city of Tours suffered severe head injuries and lost his vision. Additionally, in Saint-Ouen-l'Aumône, a 14-year-old lost a significant portion of his teeth due to a projectile shot from close range.

Government Response to Protesters' Demands

French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu announced that he has instructed government ministers to address the main demands of the students. Among the demands that the government will address are the replacement of absent teachers, a review of the school day from 8 AM to 6 PM, and the need for longer lunch breaks.

The government has also committed to addressing necessary repairs in dilapidated school buildings. Lecornu stated that ministers are expected to present their initial proposals by the end of October. These protests have put significant pressure on a government seeking to reduce its growing budget deficit.
