The service inflation rate in Japan reached 3.7% in August, the highest level in over two years, which has strengthened expectations for a further interest rate hike by the Bank of Japan (BOJ).

Increase in Producer Price Index for Services

According to published data, the Producer Price Index for Services (SPPI), which measures the prices that companies charge each other for services, increased from 3.6% in July to 3.7% year-on-year in August. This increase was driven by rising transportation, advertising, and rental costs, indicating broader price pressures in the Japanese economy.

Impacts on Central Bank Monetary Policies

This data is released as the Bank of Japan raised its key interest rate by 25 basis points to 1.25% in early September. This targeted action aims to adjust monetary policies amid persistent inflationary pressures and high wages. The central bank has also warned that underlying inflation may exceed the established 2% target.

The interest rate hike was approved by a majority vote of 7 to 2 among the central bank's policy board members. In this regard, the central bank stated: "In today's monetary policy meeting, the Bank of Japan's policy board decided to maintain the collateral-free interest rate at around 1.25%."

The September rate hike brings Japan's policy rate to its highest level since 1995, and the central bank continues to normalize its monetary policies. The bank had previously announced that it would "continue to raise the policy interest rate and adjust the degree of monetary easing depending on developments in economic activities, prices, and financial conditions."

In the recent monetary policy meeting, the central bank also set the base loan rate under its supplemental loan facilities at 1.5% and adjusted loan rates for financing operations to support financial institutions in affected areas, as well as credit rates against collective collateral.
