Treasury bills are short-term, high-security financial instruments issued by the Ministry of Finance of Oman, allowing authorized commercial banks to invest their excess funds. The Central Bank of Oman acts as the issuing manager of these bills and facilitates this process by providing liquidity through discounting and repurchase operations (Repo).
The interest rate on Repo operations with the Central Bank of Oman is set at 4.5%, and the discount rate on treasury bill discounting facilities is set at 5%. Additionally, treasury bills contribute to the development of the local money market and create a benchmark yield curve for short-term interest rates. The government can also use this instrument in emergencies to finance its current expenses.
