Hospitals in Yemen are under severe pressure due to a sudden increase in war casualties. Intense fighting on various fronts has cut off humanitarian aid for around 800,000 people.

Unprecedented Number of War Injuries

Frontline hospitals in areas such as Marib, Taiz, and the Red Sea coast of Yemen are witnessing an unprecedented number of patients injured due to the war. Some of these centers have admitted over 700 war casualties in just one week. This alarming situation is particularly concerning for the healthcare staff in Yemen, who are under immense pressure.

Humanitarian Crisis and Suspension of Aid

More than 200,000 people have been displaced from their homes, and this crisis has arisen as a result of new clashes between the Iran-backed Houthi group and the Saudi-backed government forces. These clashes have led to the suspension of humanitarian aid for 800,000 people in Taiz, Yemen's third-largest city, which currently houses the highest number of displaced individuals.

The World Food Organization has announced that some areas are now inaccessible due to the fighting and road blockages. The wheat flour stock is nearly depleted, and the remaining food in local markets may only last for a short period.

According to the World Food Organization's representative and country director in Yemen, Al-Khider Daloum, this type of situation could quickly turn into a humanitarian disaster if aid cannot safely reach those in need.

Yemen's healthcare services, which have been affected by over a decade of war, economic crisis, displacement, and disease outbreaks, may have limited capacity to accommodate a renewed increase in mass casualties if the fighting escalates. This warning has been issued by the International Committee of the Red Cross.
