The Foreign Minister of India, S. Jaishankar, met with her Canadian counterpart, Anita Anand, in New Delhi on Wednesday to discuss bilateral relations between the two countries. This meeting was aimed at strengthening the strategic partnership and joint cooperation in various fields.

During this meeting, the two leaders engaged in discussions on a variety of issues including trade and investment, education, energy, defense, and people-to-people exchanges. S. Jaishankar expressed her satisfaction during the meeting, stating: "I am pleased to have met with the Foreign Minister of Canada in New Delhi today. We reviewed the progress in the relations between our two countries in the areas of trade and investment, education, energy, and defense. We also exchanged views on key regional and global developments."
High-Level Diplomatic Meetings and Contacts
This meeting took place as Anita Anand, the Foreign Minister of Canada, had visited India on Tuesday. The Ministry of External Affairs of India stated in a release: "A warm welcome to the Foreign Minister of Canada, Anita Anand, during her visit to India. This is Anand's third visit to India since June 2025, reflecting ongoing high-level engagement and positive progress in India-Canada relations."
This meeting provided an opportunity for both sides to advance the bilateral partnership based on recent developments. Additionally, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Canadian counterpart, Mark Carney, also discussed the need to capitalize on this positive trend in relations between the two countries over a phone call last night.
After the phone call, Prime Minister Modi wrote: "I had a warm and constructive conversation with Prime Minister Mark Carney. We emphasized the need for progress in India-Canada relations and working towards tangible outcomes in key areas of the strategic partnership, including trade, energy, technology, security, and people-to-people exchanges." He added: "India and Canada are working together towards creating a sustainable and prosperous world."
These discussions come as India's Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, also met with Canada's Minister of International Trade, Mary Ng, to advance negotiations on the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between India and Canada.
Goyal stated: "We discussed advancing CEPA negotiations, focusing on creating a balanced and mutually beneficial agreement that enhances market access and provides new business and investment opportunities. I am confident that CEPA will accelerate a new phase of bilateral trade and strengthen our economic partnership for mutual prosperity."
Ng also noted that the Canadian delegation will focus on key sectors including aerospace, clean energy, technology, life sciences, agriculture, and forestry. She added: "We are also advancing CEPA negotiations to create more opportunities for Canadian workers and businesses."
Given these positive developments, India and Canada are working on an agreement that will help open up more opportunities for businesses and workers.
