The Indian Ministry of External Affairs announced that 12 crew members of the commercial ship "MT On Peace" (MT On Peace), which is sailing under the Panamanian flag, were injured in an attack near the Strait of Hormuz and the coast of Oman. The ship was passing through this strategic waterway, and at the time of the attack, there were 19 people on board, including 17 Indian citizens.
Details of the incident and immediate actions
According to the information provided, the attack on the ship resulted in injuries to 12 crew members, including 11 Indian citizens. Following the incident, Omani officials took action to transfer these individuals to the city of Khasab for treatment. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs, while expressing deep concern over the recurrence of such attacks, called for an immediate end to these types of attacks in order to maintain peace and stability in the region.
Call for dialogue and diplomacy
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs also highlighted the importance of ending attacks on commercial ships and civilian infrastructure and called for the restoration of the free movement of trade and navigation in international waterways. The ministry reminded that a similar incident last month resulted in the death of an Indian sailor in an attack on another ship off the coast of Oman.
In a separate statement, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs condemned the attack on the "MV Roid Mamadov" in the Black Sea, which resulted in the deaths of two foreign sailors and injuries to several crew members, including Indian citizens. According to reports, Romanian officials rescued the injured and they are currently receiving treatment. India emphasized that the three Indian citizens who were on this ship are in good health.
Impacts on global trade
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs emphasized that attacks on maritime fleets in international waterways undermine global trade and stressed the need for dialogue and diplomacy to end conflicts. Additionally, India and Liberia launched the "Group of Friends on the Safety and Security of Transport and Seafarers" on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly meetings last September, which includes 25 countries. The aim of this group is to ensure the safety and security of crew members of commercial ships and cargo operations against targeted attacks.
