India faced a current account deficit of $7 billion in July 2026, which is a significant increase from the $3.2 billion deficit in the previous year. This increase is mainly attributed to the widening goods trade deficit and has impacted the economic situation of the country according to preliminary data released.

Details of India's Current Account Deficit

The current account deficit, which reflects the difference between income and expenses in trade, services, income, and transfers, has reached $11.2 billion for the first four months of the fiscal year 2026. This figure shows a significant increase compared to $6.6 billion in the same period of 2025.

Goods and Services Trade

The goods trade deficit increased to $31.7 billion in July 2026, up from $28.2 billion last year. Goods exports for this month reached $45.1 billion, an increase from $37.4 billion last year, but imports surged at a faster pace to $76.8 billion, which is significant compared to $65.6 billion last year.

In the first four months of the fiscal year, goods exports rose to $177.1 billion, while imports reached $294.9 billion. These changes have led to an increase in the goods trade deficit to $117.8 billion, which shows a significant rise from $97.1 billion in the same period last year.

On the other hand, the increase in the current account deficit was somewhat offset by a stronger surplus in services. Net service receipts rose to $17.6 billion in July 2026. In this month, service exports reached $38.3 billion, up from $33.7 billion last year.

Additionally, net transfers also increased to $13.2 billion, while net income outflows rose to $6.1 billion.

However, the capital account in July 2026 saw a net inflow of $27.7 billion, significantly higher than the $3.5 billion last year. Net foreign direct investment also increased to $7.3 billion.
