Iran announced that it has received the United States' response to its latest proposal for reviving the ceasefire in the Persian Gulf. This news comes as the withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq is celebrated as a success for Iran and its allies.
Withdrawal of U.S. Forces from Iraq
On Wednesday, U.S. and Iraqi officials announced the withdrawal of the last U.S. forces from military bases in Iraq. This action is seen as the realization of an agreement made in 2024 under President Joe Biden and implemented by the administration of Donald Trump while the war with Iran continues. The withdrawal of U.S. forces has been celebrated and recognized as a historic victory for Iraqi Islamic resistance groups and brave Iraqis.
Iran's Proposal to the United States
Last week, Iran presented a proposal stating that the United States should lift the blockade on Iranian ports, and Iran would reopen the disrupted Strait of Hormuz within seven days. Although Donald Trump announced on Sunday that he rejected this proposal, Abbas Araghchi, Iran's Foreign Minister, stated that Tehran has not received any official rejection from the United States.
Currently, with the increase in shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, high costs are being imposed on shippers. However, the flow of crude oil, refined products, and natural gas remains severely disrupted. In the latest incidents, two ships were targeted by missile projects on Tuesday.
Consequences of the Troop Withdrawal
Political analysts believe that the withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq could lead to an increase in the power of Iranian proxy groups. These groups may attempt to strengthen their role in shaping government policies and consolidating their presence in key institutions. While in the United States, polls show that the war with Iran has never been very popular, disruptions in global energy supply and rising fuel prices have harmed Republicans.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps of Iran has urged the American people to remove Trump's allies from power and reminded them that the world has changed. This war has intensified the economic crisis within Iran, but Tehran has managed to maintain its capabilities to strike at neighbors and threaten shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
