Ali Al-Zaydi, the Prime Minister of Iraq, met with Ahmad Al-Shara, the President of Syria, on Wednesday during his first trip to Syria. The meeting took place at Damascus International Airport, and the two leaders then discussed at the Al-Shaab Palace in Damascus. The aim of these discussions was to strengthen security, economic, and trade cooperation and to review regional developments.
Strengthening Trade and Investment Relations
During this meeting, Al-Zaydi and Al-Shara emphasized the importance of increasing trade and encouraging investment in both countries. The two sides examined opportunities related to this area and focused particularly on enhancing economic and trade cooperation. The official Syrian news agency, SANA, reported, citing informed sources, that these negotiations included plans for oil exports via the Baniyas pipeline.

Cooperation Programs in Oil and Agriculture
According to the Iraqi Prime Minister's office, plans for oil exports via the Baniyas pipeline, which has a capacity of two million barrels per day, were discussed. Additionally, cooperation in the fields of agriculture and food security for both countries was also considered an important topic of these discussions. The Kirkuk-Baniyas pipeline, which runs from Kirkuk in northern Iraq to the Mediterranean port of Baniyas in Syria, is currently inactive, and discussions on this matter could help revive this pipeline and increase economic interactions.
This meeting is seen as an important step towards strengthening bilateral relations and increasing regional cooperation. Given the geographical positions of both countries and their economic needs, establishing an effective cooperation network could significantly contribute to stability and economic development in the region.
