On October 15, 2023, Iraq's Parliament fully formed the new government by approving the remaining cabinet of Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi. This decision came after five months since the start of Al-Zaidi's government and following the vacancy of several ministries. The representatives approved 11 ministries, including Nif Al-Shammari as Minister of Defense and Yasser Al-Maliki as Minister of Interior.

Challenges and Obstacles of the New Cabinet

The approved ministries had remained vacant since the start of Al-Zaidi's government in May of this year. However, due to disagreements among parties, the voting for the Minister of Migration and Displaced Persons was postponed. The representatives also approved three deputy prime ministers, one of whom is Laith Al-Khazali, a senior leader of the Asa'ib Ahl al-Haq movement.

The Asa'ib Ahl al-Haq movement was designated as a foreign terrorist organization by the United States in 2020, and its leaders, Qais Al-Khazali and Laith Al-Khazali, were named specially designated global terrorists. The United States has accused this group of carrying out attacks against American and coalition forces in Iraq. This issue could impact the functioning of the new cabinet.

Government's Economic and Reform Plans

The Al-Zaidi government has committed to implementing economic reforms, anti-corruption measures, and strengthening state institutions. However, this government faces significant challenges, including rebuilding an economy damaged by regional instability, combating systemic corruption, and controlling armed groups affiliated with Iran.

According to the roadmap that this cabinet has outlined for itself, its priorities seem to include strengthening internal security and creating economic stability in the country. Parliament representatives believe that the new cabinet must respond to existing challenges with empathy and cooperation among different parties and regain public trust.

Ultimately, the formation of the new Iraqi cabinet represents a positive step towards political and economic stability in the country. This could have profound impacts on Iraq's relations with neighboring countries as well as with global powers.
