Israel has been introduced as a new partner of the Pacific Islands Forum. Gideon Sa'ar, Israel's Foreign Minister, stated that this move is part of the country's broader efforts to strengthen relations with this region.

History and Background

Before Israel's acceptance, the Pacific Islands Forum included 21 dialogue partners, among them the United States, China, Japan, and the European Union. Dialogue partners refer to countries and organizations that are outside the Pacific region but have significant interests in the islands and participate in discussions and initiatives related to regional development and security.

Confirmation of Israel's Request

Gideon Sa'ar noted that Baron Divawosi Waka, the Secretary-General of the Forum, informed him that Pacific leaders confirmed Israel's request for membership as a "Forum Partner" in a meeting held in Palau. Israel submitted this request during Sa'ar's visit to Fiji in June.

Earlier this year, Israel opened an embassy in Fiji, which also serves as the representative for nine other Pacific island nations. Sa'ar also added that Papua New Guinea, Fiji, and Nauru have opened embassies in Jerusalem since the current Israeli government took office.

Diplomatic Implications

This move comes as Israel seeks to deepen its diplomatic support amid increasing international pressure due to its actions in the Gaza war. Several Pacific island countries have at times voted in favor of Israel or against UN resolutions that Israel opposed.

The Pacific Islands Forum has not yet publicly confirmed Israel's status and has not responded to immediate requests for comment. Meanwhile, Israeli officials hope that this new partnership can help strengthen relations with Pacific countries and increase Israel's diplomatic influence in the region.
