Isaac Herzog, the President of Israel, welcomed Boy George, the British singer and staunch supporter of Israel, at his office in Jerusalem on Monday. This meeting occurred as Herzog is soon expected to introduce someone to form a new government.

Boy George's Presence in Israel

Boy George, whose real name is George O'Dowd, is known for his outspoken support of Israel and opposition to global calls for boycotting the country. The artist, as a rare Western pop star, has traveled to Israel to hold two concerts in Tel Aviv. During this meeting, Herzog expressed friendship to Boy George, saying, "Welcome, dear Boy George. You are a great friend."

Messages of Solidarity and Support

Boy George, wearing a black beret and confetti on his head, responded to the Israeli President in Hebrew, saying, "People of Israel, we will dance again!" This phrase refers to his message of solidarity that was released after the October 7, 2023 Hamas attacks, the deadliest day in Israel's history. On that day, militants from Gaza stormed into Israel, and in one of the worst scenes of bloodshed, young people were shot at a Nova music festival.

In July, Boy George released a song titled "We Will Dance Again," in which he supported Israel's military operations in Gaza, leading to criticism and pressure for him to withdraw from a musical in the West End. The 65-year-old singer, as a pioneer in the LGBTQ community, has often spoken about his closeness to the Jewish community he grew up in London.

In recent years, few major international pop stars have traveled to Israel, while activists have called for artists to boycott the country due to the Gaza war. These boycotts have led to wider destruction in the Gaza Strip, with most areas turned into ruins.

As Boy George performs music in Israel, the international community continues to monitor the political and social developments in the country and their impacts on regional security and stability. This meeting also reflects the diversity and complexity of cultural relations in international arenas.
