Kuwait and the United Nations unveiled a new $45 million plan to support national development projects in Kuwait as part of their efforts to strengthen their cooperation. Ghada Al-Taher, the UN Secretary-General's representative and resident coordinator in Kuwait, highlighted the importance of this collaboration and its alignment with the UN's 2030 Sustainable Development Goals and Kuwait's 2035 Vision during her meeting with the media.
New Programs for Youth and Sustainable Development
During this meeting, Ghada Al-Taher emphasized that the plan includes 100% funding from Kuwait for projects that will benefit the people of Kuwait. She also mentioned the launch of the fifth season of the "Young Ambassadors" initiative, which will focus on Sustainable Development Goal number 12, namely responsible consumption and production. This initiative will continue to promote collaboration with youth and media, particularly with Kuwait Times.
Global Challenges and the Need for Multilateral Cooperation
Al-Taher pointed out global challenges including wars, climate change, and new technologies, stressing the necessity of multilateral cooperation. She stated that no country can overcome global challenges alone and emphasized the need for reforms in the United Nations to address the needs of future generations. She also referred to the work of Antonio Guterres, the former UN Secretary-General, during this critical period and said that the next Secretary-General must continue the reform process.
Regarding the issue of missing Kuwaitis and the recovery of national archives after the Iraqi invasion in 1990, Al-Taher stated that the UN acknowledges the unresolved aspects of this issue and has appointed a senior representative to collaborate with Kuwait and Iraq on this matter.
Al-Taher also described the humanitarian situation in Gaza as "devastating" and emphasized the importance of respecting international law and supporting humanitarian workers. She stressed the need to prevent targeting civilian infrastructure, including hospitals and schools.
In conclusion, Al-Taher referred to the UN's activities in Kuwait regarding the fight against violence against women and children and urged the media to play a role in raising awareness and creating safe environments for these groups.
