Kuwait emphasized the need for the complete elimination of nuclear weapons as the only guarantee against their use at the First Committee of the UN General Assembly on disarmament and international security. Jareh Al-Enzi, Kuwait's diplomatic representative at this meeting, warned that the accumulation and development of these weapons pose a serious threat to international security.

Kuwait's Commitment to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons

Jareh Al-Enzi expressed regret over the lack of agreement at the 2026 Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and emphasized Kuwait's commitment to this treaty and the balanced implementation of its three pillars. He stated that the lack of agreement at this conference does not in any way nullify existing obligations, especially under Article VI of this treaty. Al-Enzi called for practical and verifiable actions for nuclear disarmament with a specific timeline and legal and effective security guarantees for countries without nuclear weapons.

Concerns Regarding Iran's Nuclear Program

Furthermore, Al-Enzi emphasized the importance of the decisions of the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and urged Iran to address its non-compliance with nuclear safety measures, provide necessary information, and grant inspectors access to nuclear sites. He added that trust in the peaceful nature of nuclear programs depends on their verifiability, and cooperation with the UN nuclear regulatory body is a legal obligation. Al-Enzi also declared Kuwait's support for diplomatic solutions to address existing concerns and maintain regional security and stability.

Jareh Al-Enzi also reaffirmed Kuwait's strong support for efforts to declare the Middle East a nuclear-weapon-free zone and the implementation of Resolution 1995 in this regard, wishing success to Oman in chairing the seventh session of the relevant conference.

He concluded by noting that during Kuwait's presidency of the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency in 2026-2027, the country will continue to uphold the independence of technical assessments, build consensus to support the verification and implementation of obligations, strengthen technical cooperation, and promote the peaceful use of nuclear energy. Al-Enzi called for turning resolutions into tangible actions to ensure the security of people and their right to peace and development.
